Upgrading Operating System and Database
When you update the SAP system, you may have to upgrade your operating system and database to a new version.
Prerequisites
You make sure that you meet the following requirements before you start the Software Update Manager for the first time:
-
Move the primary application server instance to Linux or AIX if it has been running on Solaris or z/OS USS so far.
-
Db2 Connect
The upgrade may introduce a change to the client connectivity setup. CLI-based applications such as the ABAP kernel or tools use the new Db2 CLI Driver (Thin Client), while JDBC-based applications load the JDBC driver. Depending on the kernel layout, the following locations are used for the CLI driver:
- New Kernel Layout (sapcpe-tool
and kernel directory Move the primary application server
instance to Windows if it has
been/usr/sap/<SID>/SYS/exe/uc/<platform> are
used):
$(DIR_GLOBAL)/db2
- Traditional kernel layout (Kernel directory
/usr/sap/<SID>/SYS/exe/run is
used):
$(DIR_INSTANCE)/db2
-
For upgrades from Release 4.6C and 6.x, and when changing from the old to the new kernel layout on 7.0x releases, the Software Update Manager automatically installs a new Db2 for z/OS client connectivity under subdirectory db2 of the GLOBAL directory (new layout). I all other scenarios (for instance when the kernel layout stays the same), no change to the connectivity is made.
- New Kernel Layout (sapcpe-tool
and kernel directory Move the primary application server
instance to Windows if it has
been/usr/sap/<SID>/SYS/exe/uc/<platform> are
used):
-
Database setup
Your database is set up correctly as described in Making Preparations at the Database Level.
Context
For more information about which versions are currently supported, see the Product
Availability Matrix on SAP Support Portal at http://support.sap.com/pam
. The Software Update Manager only checks
the minimum versions required for the update.
If you need to upgrade an operating system or database, or migrate a database, then the timing and the sequence of the individual upgrades is of great importance. The procedure differs according to the database you use. The following text provides an overview of the main process steps for upgrading the operating system and database system for each database.
Procedure
- Run the Software Update Manager up to the Checks roadmap step and analyze the results.
- Upgrade the SAP system.
